A Generation Raised on Analog but Fluent in Digital

<rant>

I had the pleasure of hanging out with some of Toronto’s finest digital agency owners last night, Khalid Mokhtarzada from the award winning Pixel Dreams and David Senior from Playground.

On our way to our event, we were discussing our generation of 20 somethings and how we’re the last generation who were raised on analogue but now live and work in a digital world.

A few examples…

  • I learned to type on a typewriter
  • My parents had not one, but TWO rotary dial telephones
  • TV reception was influenced by the antena we had on the side of our house
  • Music came on vinyl, then cassettes and we all walked around with Sony Walkmans
  • Maps were used to drive places we hadn’t been before.
  • When you arranged to meet your friends… you had a time and location arranged in advance. There was no “I’ll text you if I’m running late”
I know this post is going to make me sound like an old curmudgeon… but today’s youth have no idea what the analog world was like!
Think I’m wrong? Try this experiment… Put a 10 year old in a old car with windows that roll down using the old “lever thing” Tell them to “roll the window down” and watch the mayham begin as they hunt for a button to push.
