Affiliate marketing is the process of selling products online through affiliates.  You set an affiliate program up with a network that has many affiliates.  I like to think of them as my online sales force that’s selling my product online all hours of the day.  After setting your product up with a reputable network you enter in all your info, put some code on your website and you are all set to start having affiliates sell your products online.  That’s the 20 second version of affiliate marketing and how it works.

Now to the harder question, why should I use affiliate marketing?  Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money online if you know what you are doing.  You give up a percentage of your profits and give to your “online sales team” also known as affiliates.  Keep in mind, the more you reward them the more traffic they are going to drive to your site and the more sales you are going to make.  It’s the same with a sales team, if you don’t give them incentives them, they won’t work that hard.  If your offer is good enough, you’ll get thousands of affiliates pushing big traffic to your website.

So what are the drawbacks to affiliate marketing?  With having an online sales force, there come with it their own set of problems.  You always need to be managing them and making sure they are driving traffic to you in legit ways.  You need to verify that very sale is a true sale and not just a scam.  With every business you need to make sure that you catch the scammers before they scam you.  Having someone watching all sales is crucial to your success online.  You need someone who is experienced in watching for these people and knows what to look for.  As well as someone that is constantly screening new affiliate and current affiliates.
